They've been trying 29" for dh for a while now (Intense did it for sure). That was a few years ago now and if it would have been a better application for dh, then they would've pursued it. Since they haven't, nor any others (companies and riders), that tells me they prefer 26" for dh. Mind you I'm ALL for advancement in products and innovative ideas. I'm surprised Trek is this late in the game for trying 29" dh. BTW, a certain Brendan Fairclough specifically said 'I'll quit dh if it goes to 29" and just ride motocross'. If that doesn't tell you something, I don't know what will.
Sorry man, but the whole thing just doesn't make sense. You spent a lot of money building a race bike just to not race it (apparently). You also say you knew it was going to be your last year biking so you wanted to go out with a bang, and yet you're willing to trade for a high-end all-mountain/freeride bike. I hope you can sell it so someone will actually USE it not just SHOW it. I don't comment often but I felt compelled to say my 2 cents.
Nothing's really changed, though. The guys who know, have their bike setup optimal for their riding style and capabilities. The guys who don't, have a bike that doesn't fit and a slammed seatpost so there's less power being put to the cranks when they try and tuck and sprint because their knees are topping out by their ears on every stroke, lol! To me, it's the same old, same old. You have pros and you have posers. I happen to be a poser who wishes he could ride like a pro, lol. About Us
